Work in Parliament

Careers at the heart of British democracy

Careers in Parliament

Working in Parliament offers a unique opportunity to be at the centre of political decision making and contribute to the democratic process. Whether you're interested in policy, research, communications, administration or public engagement, there are a wide range of roles available within Parliament.

Types of jobs in Parliament:

MPs’ Staff: Work directly for a Member of Parliament in their Westminster office or constituency. Roles include Casework, Research, Communication and Office Management.

Parliamentary Services: Roles within the administration of Parliament itself (not tied to a political party) such as Clerks, Committee staff, Researchers and Librarians.

Political roles: Positions with political parties, including policy advisors, media officers and campaign coordinators.

Internships and Apprenticeships: Some Parliamentary offices and political organisations offer entry- level routes including graduate schemes and internships.

Typical Skills and Qualifications:

Strong communication and writing skills

Interest in Politics, Law or Public Service

Analytical thinking and research capabilties

Whilst some MPs prefer that their staff members have acquired a degree (particularly in Politics, Law or a related field), many MPs are more interested in a candidate who is enthusiastic, eager to learn and ideally has some experience working with members of the public.
